배경 설명
Olfactory receptors interact with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate neuronal responses that trigger the perception of smell. These receptor proteins belong to the large family of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCR) derived from single coding-exon genes. Olfactory receptors possess a 7-transmembrane domain structure similar to many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors and mediate odorant signal transduction. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the genome. The nomenclature for these genes and proteins is organism-specific. This olfactory receptor gene is a segregating pseudogene, where some individuals have a functional allele while others have a non-functional one.
