Background
Olfactory receptor family 2 subfamily A member 4 (OR2A4) is a human olfactory receptor that interacts with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate neuronal responses responsible for smell perception. These receptors belong to the large family of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) derived from single coding-exon genes. Olfactory receptors share a 7-transmembrane domain structure with many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors and are responsible for recognition and G protein-mediated transduction of odorant signals. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the genome, and the nomenclature for this organism is independent of other species.
