Background
Olfactory receptor family 9 subfamily K member 2 (OR9K2) is a human olfactory receptor that interacts with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate a neuronal response responsible for smell perception. These receptors belong to the G-protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) family, characterized by a seven-transmembrane domain structure shared with many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors. They play a key role in the recognition and G protein-mediated transduction of odorant signals. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the human genome, and its nomenclature is organism-specific (RefSeq, Jul 2008).
