Background
Olfactory receptor family 6 subfamily Y member 1 (OR6Y1) is a human olfactory receptor that interacts with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate neuronal responses responsible for smell perception. These receptors belong to the large family of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) derived from single coding-exon genes. Olfactory receptors share a seven-transmembrane domain structure common to many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors and mediate G protein–dependent signal transduction of odorant signals. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the genome, and its nomenclature is organism-specific. (RefSeq, Jul 2008)
