Background
Olfactory receptor family 6 subfamily C member 1 (OR6C1) is a human olfactory receptor that interacts with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate neuronal responses responsible for smell perception.
Olfactory receptors belong to a large family of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) derived from single coding-exon genes.
These receptors share a 7-transmembrane domain structure with many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors and are involved in G protein-mediated signal transduction of odorant signals.
The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the genome, and the nomenclature for these genes and proteins is organism-specific (RefSeq, Jul 2008).
