Background
Olfactory receptor family 5 subfamily T member 1 (OR5T1) of Homo sapiens interacts with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate neuronal responses that trigger the perception of smell. These olfactory receptor proteins belong to a large family of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) derived from single coding-exon genes. They share a 7-transmembrane domain structure common to many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors and are responsible for recognition and G protein-mediated transduction of odorant signals. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the human genome. Nomenclature for olfactory receptor genes and proteins in this organism is independent of other species.
