Background
Olfactory receptor family 5 subfamily B member 2 (OR5B2) is a human olfactory receptor that interacts with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate neuronal responses responsible for smell perception. These receptors belong to the G-protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) family, characterized by a 7-transmembrane domain structure similar to many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors. They mediate odorant signal recognition and transduction via G proteins. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the human genome, and its nomenclature is specific to each organism.
