Background
Olfactory receptor family 4 subfamily S member 1 (OR4S1) is a human olfactory receptor that interacts with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate neuronal responses responsible for the perception of smell. These receptors belong to the large family of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) derived from single coding-exon genes. Olfactory receptors share a seven-transmembrane domain structure with many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors and are involved in the recognition and G protein-mediated transduction of odorant signals. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the genome, and the nomenclature for these genes and proteins is organism-specific (RefSeq, Jul 2008).
