Background
Olfactory receptor family 2 subfamily L member 3 (OR2L3) is a human olfactory receptor that interacts with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate neuronal responses responsible for smell perception. These receptors belong to the large family of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) derived from single coding-exon genes. They share a seven-transmembrane domain structure with many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors and are responsible for odorant signal recognition and G protein-mediated transduction. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the human genome. The nomenclature for olfactory receptor genes and proteins in humans is independent of other organisms (RefSeq, Jul 2008).
