Background
Olfactory receptor family 1 subfamily L member 3 (OR1L3) is a human olfactory receptor that interacts with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate neuronal responses responsible for smell perception. These olfactory receptor proteins belong to the large family of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) derived from single coding-exon genes. They share a seven-transmembrane domain structure with many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors and mediate odorant signal transduction via G proteins. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the human genome. The nomenclature for olfactory receptor genes and proteins is organism-specific. (RefSeq, Jul 2008)
