Background
Olfactory receptor family 1 subfamily K member 1 (OR1K1) is a human olfactory receptor that interacts with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate neuronal responses responsible for smell perception. These receptors belong to the large family of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) derived from single coding-exon genes. They share a 7-transmembrane domain structure with many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors, mediating recognition and G protein-coupled signal transduction of odorant molecules. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the genome, and the nomenclature for these genes and proteins is organism-specific. (RefSeq, Jul 2008)
