Background
Olfactory receptor family 1 subfamily E member 2 (OR1E2) is a human olfactory receptor protein that interacts with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate neuronal responses triggering the perception of smell. These receptors belong to the G-protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) family, arising from single coding-exon genes. They share a 7-transmembrane domain structure common to many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors and are responsible for odorant recognition and signal transduction. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the human genome, with nomenclature independent across species (RefSeq, Jul 2008).
