Background
Azurophil granules, specialized lysosomes of neutrophils, contain multiple proteins involved in microbial killing. The gene encodes a preproprotein processed into a mature azurophil granule antibiotic protein with monocyte chemotactic and antimicrobial activity. It also functions as a multifunctional inflammatory mediator. Although it belongs to the serine protease gene family, it is not a serine proteinase due to replacement of active site residues. The genes encoding this protein, neutrophil elastase 2, and proteinase 3 form a cluster on chromosome 19pter, expressed coordinately and packaged into azurophil granules during neutrophil differentiation.
