Target Information
Casein kinase II (CK2) is a serine/threonine kinase present in all eukaryotic cells, indicating its fundamental cellular role. The holoenzyme is a tetramer composed of two alpha or alpha-prime subunits (or one of each) and two beta subunits. The alpha subunit acts as the catalytic unit, while the beta subunit’s function remains unclear.
CK2 phosphorylates key intracellular signaling proteins involved in tumor suppression (p53, PTEN) and tumorigenesis (myc, jun, NF-kappaB). It also influences Wnt signaling through beta-catenin phosphorylation and the PI3K pathway via Akt phosphorylation.
