Best2는 칼슘 감응성 염화 이온 채널을 형성하며, 중탄산염에 투과성을 가집니다. Best2 유전자는 bestrophin 유전자 패밀리에 속하며, 이들은 유사한 엑손-인트론 구조를 가지지만 3' 말단이 다릅니다. Bestrophin 단백질은 막단백질로, 방향족 잔기가 풍부한 영역과 불변의 Arg-Phe-Pro 모티프를 포함합니다. Best2 유전자의 돌연변이는 황반 이영양증(Vitelliform Macular Dystrophy)과 관련이 있으며, 주로 망막색소상피와 결장에서 발현됩니다.
