Target Information
The TBX5 gene belongs to a phylogenetically conserved family of genes sharing a common DNA-binding domain, the T-box. T-box genes encode transcription factors involved in developmental regulation. TBX5 is closely linked to T-box 3 (associated with ulnar mammary syndrome) on human chromosome 12. The protein plays a role in heart development and limb identity specification. Mutations in TBX5 are associated with Holt-Oram syndrome, affecting heart and upper limb formation. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been described.
