Target Information
Microtubules are intracellular dynamic polymers composed of evolutionarily conserved polymorphic alpha/beta-tubulin heterodimers and numerous microtubule-associated proteins (MAPs). They exhibit intrinsic polarity with highly dynamic plus ends and less dynamic minus ends and are essential for processes such as mitosis, meiosis, maintenance of cell shape, and intracellular transport. Microtubules also facilitate cell movement via flagella and cilia. In mammalian cells, minus ends are anchored in microtubule organizing centers (MTOCs). Tubulin heterodimer association requires GTP, and microtubule polymerization is reversible, displaying dynamic instability. Alpha-tubulin (~50 kDa) exists as part of soluble alpha/beta-tubulin dimers or polymerized microtubules and is encoded by multiple tubulin genes forming distinct classes (six genes in humans).
