Target Information
The Caspase 3 gene encodes a cysteine-aspartic acid protease that plays a central role in the execution phase of cell apoptosis. Caspases are synthesized as inactive proenzymes and become active through proteolytic processing. Caspase 3 cleaves and activates caspases 6, 7, and 9, and is itself processed by caspases 8, 9, and 10. It is the predominant caspase involved in cleavage of amyloid-beta 4A precursor protein, associated with neuronal death in Alzheimer’s disease. Alternative splicing produces two transcript variants encoding the same protein.
