Target Information
The protein encoded by AGT (angiotensinogen precursor) is expressed in the liver and cleaved by renin in response to lowered blood pressure. The resulting product, angiotensin I, is further processed by angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) to form angiotensin II, which plays a key role in blood pressure regulation.
Mutations in AGT are associated with essential hypertension, renal tubular dysgenesis, atrial fibrillation, and inflammatory bowel disease.
