Target Information
Neurofilaments (NFs) are intermediate filaments expressed almost exclusively in neuronal cells, particularly in large axons. NFs consist of three polypeptide chains—NF-M (medium), NF-H (high), and NF-L (light)—which share a coiled-coil core domain but differ in terminal sequences. The NF-M tail domain plays a critical role in axonal size and cytoskeletal architecture, regulated by phosphorylation and O-GlcNAcylation. Antibodies against neurofilament subunits serve as reliable neuronal markers due to their abundance, neuron-specific expression, and biochemical stability.
