Target Information
The fumarase protein is an enzymatic component of the tricarboxylic acid (Krebs) cycle, catalyzing the conversion of fumarate to L-malate. It exists in both cytosolic and mitochondrial forms, differing by the N-terminal extension. The mitochondrial form is processed to match the cytosolic version. This enzyme functions as a homotetramer and mutations in its gene can cause fumarase deficiency, leading to progressive encephalopathy.
