NPW는 23 및 30 아미노산 길이의 신경펩타이드로 가공되어 중추신경계 내 두 개의 G-단백질 결합 수용체를 활성화합니다. 이 신경펩타이드는 adenylate cyclase/protein kinase A 신호 경로를 통해 부신 세포에서 코르티솔 분비를 증가시키는 것으로 알려져 있습니다. Preproprotein은 mouse ortholog 분석을 통해 유추된 비-AUG 개시 코돈을 사용하여 번역됩니다.
