Target Information
Members of the Id family of basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) proteins include ID1, ID2, ID3, and ID4. They are ubiquitously expressed and form heterodimers with class A and B HLH proteins. Due to the absence of the basic region, these heterodimers cannot bind DNA, thus acting as negative regulators of bHLH protein DNA binding. ID proteins modulate differentiation processes such as muscle-specific gene expression by controlling the availability of DNA-binding bHLH dimers. Expression of ID proteins is growth factor-dependent, and reduction of ID mRNA delays cell cycle reentry following growth factor stimulation.
