Target Information
The protein encoded by the classic MBP gene is a major constituent of the myelin sheath of oligodendrocytes and Schwann cells in the nervous system. MBP-related transcripts are also present in bone marrow and the immune system. These mRNAs arise from the long MBP gene (also called Golli-MBP) containing three additional exons upstream of the classic MBP exons. Alternative splicing from Golli and MBP transcription start sites produces two sets of MBP-related transcripts and gene products. Golli mRNAs encode hybrid proteins combining N-terminal Golli sequence with MBP sequence, while the second family encodes the well-characterized myelin basic proteins. This conserved gene structure suggests functional and regulatory importance across species.
