Background
This gene encodes a type I membrane protein that is a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily. It is expressed by antigen-presenting cells and serves as a ligand for two T-cell surface proteins: CD28 and cytotoxic T-lymphocyte-associated protein 4 (CTLA-4).
Binding with CD28 provides a costimulatory signal for T-cell activation, while interaction with CTLA-4 negatively regulates T-cell activation and reduces immune response.
Alternative splicing produces several transcript variants encoding different isoforms.
