Background
The protein encoded by this gene is a serine proteinase inhibitor that regulates tissue-type plasminogen activator I activity. It constitutes a significant portion of lipoprotein(a) and is proteolytically cleaved into fragments that attach to atherosclerotic lesions, promoting thrombogenesis. Elevated plasma levels are associated with atherosclerosis. The encoded protein contains multiple kringle-type domains (2–43 copies), with the reference allele containing 15 repeats.
