Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are involved in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes. Mammalian mitoribosomes lack the 5S rRNA found in prokaryotes. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome vary greatly between species, making sequence homology recognition difficult. This gene encodes a 39S subunit protein, with two transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms. A pseudogene corresponding to this gene is found on chromosome 5q.
