Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs)는 세포외기질(extracellular matrix)의 모든 구성 요소를 분해할 수 있는 zinc endopeptidase 계열 효소입니다.
MMP2는 631개의 아미노산으로 구성된 전구효소 형태로 합성되며, 활성화 과정에서 첫 80개의 아미노산이 절단됩니다.
이 효소는 propeptide, catalytic, hemopexin 도메인을 포함하며, 조직 재형성(tissue remodeling)에 중요한 역할을 합니다.
MMP2 유전자의 돌연변이는 Winchester syndrome 및 Nodulosis-Arthropathy-Osteolysis (NAO) 증후군과 관련이 있습니다.
