Target Information

MAOB (Monoamine Oxidase B), also known as MAO, BRAIN, AMINE OXIDASE (FLAVIN-CONTAINING) B, is a protein encoded by the MAOB gene in humans.
MAOB is a member of the flavin monoamine oxidase family and is mapped on Xp11.3. It catalyzes the oxidative deamination of biogenic and xenobiotic amines, playing an essential role in the metabolism of neuroactive and vasoactive amines in the central nervous system and peripheral tissues.
This protein preferentially degrades benzylamine and phenylethylamine, and also degrades dopamine.
MAO-B inhibition is associated with enhanced dopamine activity and reduced hydrogen peroxide production, thus lowering reactive oxygen species formation.
