FARS2 encodes a mitochondrial phenylalanine-tRNA synthetase (PheRS) that consists of a single polypeptide chain, unlike the (alpha-beta)₂ structure of cytoplasmic forms.
Structural and catalytic analyses suggest mitochondrial PheRSs form a distinct class from prokaryotic and cytoplasmic counterparts.
