Target Information
This gene was initially identified as a locus (RP26) associated with an autosomal recessive form of retinitis pigmentosa (arRP). It encodes a protein with ceramide kinase-like domains but does not phosphorylate ceramide, and its substrate remains unknown. The protein may act as a negative regulator of apoptosis in photoreceptor cells. Mutations cause autosomal recessive cone and rod dystrophy (arCRD). Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants and non-coding transcripts.
