Target Information

PER2 (Period circadian protein homolog 2) is a mainly nuclear protein that undergoes nucleocytoplasmic shuttling influenced by interactions with other circadian core oscillator proteins and phosphorylation. It belongs to the basic helix-loop-helix family of transcription factors and contains a PAC (PAS-associated C-terminal) domain and two PAS (PER-ARNT-SIM) domains.
PER2 is a core component of the circadian oscillator complex, which includes CRY proteins, CLOCK or NPAS2, BMAL1 or BMAL2, CSNK1D and/or CSNK1E, TIMELESS, and other PER proteins. This protein plays a crucial role in generating circadian rhythms and functions as a negative element in the transcriptional feedback loop that regulates clock function.
Expression is widespread, with strong expression in skeletal muscle and pancreas, and weaker expression in lung. Mutations in PER2 are associated with familial advanced sleep-phase syndrome (FASPS).
