These receptors are part of the G-protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) family, characterized by a 7-transmembrane domain structure. They play a key role in odorant signal recognition and transduction. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the genome, and the nomenclature for this organism’s olfactory receptors is independent of other species.
This olfactory receptor gene (OR4C5) is a segregating pseudogene—some individuals have a functional allele, while others have a non-functional variant.
