Target Information
Tyrosinase catalyzes the initial steps in melanin biosynthesis, converting tyrosine to melanin. It has both tyrosine hydroxylase and dopa oxidase activities and requires copper for function. Mutations cause oculocutaneous albinism, while polymorphisms influence skin pigmentation. The human genome also includes a pseudogene related to the 3′ half of this gene.
