Olfactory receptors interact with odorant molecules in the nose, initiating a neuronal response that triggers the perception of smell. These receptors are members of the large G-protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) family, which arises from single coding-exon genes. They share a 7-transmembrane domain structure common to many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors and mediate odorant signal transduction via G proteins. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the genome. The nomenclature for olfactory receptor genes and proteins in this organism is independent of that in other organisms.
