Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is an enzymatic component of the tricarboxylic acid cycle (Krebs cycle) and catalyzes the formation of L-malate from fumarate. It exists in both cytosolic and N-terminal extended forms, differing only in the translation start site used. The extended form is targeted to the mitochondrion, where removal of the extension yields the same form as in the cytoplasm. This enzyme functions as a homotetramer and is similar to thermostable class II fumarases. Mutations in this gene can cause fumarase deficiency, leading to progressive encephalopathy.
