Target Information

SARS-CoV-2 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2), also known as 2019-nCoV, is a virus that causes illnesses ranging from mild cold symptoms to severe respiratory distress and death.
The CoV Spike (S) protein plays a key role in viral attachment, fusion, and entry, and serves as a target for antibody development, entry inhibitors, and vaccines.
The receptor-binding domain (RBD, S-RBD) of the Spike protein binds strongly to human and bat ACE2 receptors, with SARS-CoV-2 RBD showing higher binding affinity than SARS-CoV RBD.
S1 contains the RBD that specifically binds to ACE2, while the S2 subunit mediates membrane fusion.
SARS-CoV-2 Spike protein consists of 1273 amino acids, including:

  • Signal peptide (1–13)
  • S1 subunit (14–685)
  • S2 subunit (686–1273)

The S-ECD refers to the extracellular domain of the Spike protein.
