Target Information
FABP7 was initially isolated from a human fetal brain cDNA library and its mRNA is expressed at low levels in adult brain and muscle tissues. The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the fatty acid binding protein (FABP) family—a group of small, highly conserved, cytoplasmic proteins that bind long-chain fatty acids and other hydrophobic ligands. FABPs are involved in fatty acid uptake, transport, and metabolism. FABP7 is a downstream gene of the Pax6 transcription factor and is essential for maintaining neuroepithelial cells during early cortical development. It is frequently expressed in melanomas, and down-regulation of FABP7 through RNAi expression can reduce in vitro cell proliferation and Matrigel invasion, suggesting its potential as a diagnostic and therapeutic target.
