Target Information
This gene encodes a member of the degenerin/epithelial sodium channel (DEG/ENaC) superfamily. Members of this family are amiloride-sensitive sodium channels containing intracellular N and C termini, two hydrophobic transmembrane regions, and a large extracellular loop with conserved cysteine residues.
ASIC1 is a cation channel with high affinity for sodium, gated by extracellular protons, and inhibited by amiloride. It is permeable to Ca²⁺, Li⁺, and K⁺ and expressed in various brain regions including dorsal root ganglia, olfactory bulb, hippocampus, cerebellum, and basal ganglia. Isoform 3 is expressed only in dorsal root ganglion, while isoform 1 is expressed in DRG, spinal cord, and trigeminal ganglia.
