Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and play a role in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition compared to prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. Among species, mitoribosomal proteins vary significantly in sequence and biochemical properties, making recognition by sequence homology difficult. The MRPL20 gene encodes a 39S subunit protein, and a pseudogene corresponding to this gene is found on chromosome 21q.
