NELF (nasal embryonic luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone factor)
NELF is a 530 amino acid transcription factor involved in the migration of LHRH neurons, outgrowth of olfactory axons, and suppression of transcription elongation.
It is expressed in the peripheral and central nervous systems during embryonic development and highly expressed in adult testis, kidney, and brain.
NELF couples NMDA receptor signaling to the nucleus, and knockdown impairs GnRH neuronal migration in vitro.
Mutations in the NELF gene are linked to Idiopathic Hypogonadotropic Hypogonadism (IHH), a disorder affecting pubertal maturation and reproductive function.
