Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are involved in mitochondrial protein synthesis. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with an estimated 75% protein to rRNA composition, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes where this ratio is reversed. Mammalian mitoribosomes lack 5S rRNA and show significant sequence variation among species.
This gene encodes a 39S subunit protein belonging to the EcoL15 ribosomal protein family. A pseudogene corresponding to this gene is located on chromosome 15q.
