Target Information

Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are essential for mitochondrial protein synthesis. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a 28S small subunit and a 39S large subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA ratio, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes. The MRPS12 gene encodes a 28S subunit protein of the ribosomal protein S12P family, which contributes to decoding fidelity and aminoglycoside susceptibility. The gene is located adjacent to mitochondrial seryl-tRNA synthetase and may be associated with autosomal dominant deafness (DFNA4). Multiple splice variants exist, all encoding the same protein.
