C/EBP alpha regulates gene expression in various tissues including liver, adipose, lung, and intestine. It uses a bipartite structural motif to bind DNA, forming dimers through leucine zipper helices. Basic regions interact with DNA to form contact surfaces. C/EBP alpha functions mainly in terminally differentiated, growth-arrested cells. Related family members include C/EBP beta, gamma, delta, and epsilon, which share similar DNA-binding properties. C/EBP beta and delta can form heterodimers with each other or with C/EBP alpha.
