Target Information
Cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (CO1 or MTCO1) is one of three mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA)-encoded subunits (MTCO1, MTCO2, MTCO3) of respiratory Complex IV. Complex IV, located in the mitochondrial inner membrane, is the third and final enzyme of the electron transport chain in oxidative phosphorylation. It consists of 13 polypeptides — three encoded by mtDNA and ten by nuclear DNA. The enzyme contains four redox centers (two hemes and two copper centers). Subunit I binds hemes a and a3 and copper center CuB. Mutations in MTCO1 can affect enzyme function and mitochondrial respiration efficiency.
