Target Information
This gene encodes an enzyme that reversibly catalyzes the phosphorolysis of purine nucleosides. The enzyme is trimeric, containing three identical subunits. Mutations causing nucleoside phosphorylase deficiency result in defective T-cell–mediated immunity and may also affect B-cell function and antibody responses. Neurologic disorders can occur in patients with immune defects. A known polymorphism at amino acid position 51 does not affect enzyme activity. A pseudogene has been identified on chromosome 2.
