PER2는 주로 핵에 존재하며, 다른 circadian oscillator 단백질과의 상호작용 및 인산화에 의해 핵-세포질 간 이동을 수행합니다.
이 단백질은 PAS 및 PAC 도메인을 포함하는 basic helix-loop-helix 계열 전사 인자로, CRY, CLOCK, BMAL1/2, CSNK1D/E, TIMELESS 등의 단백질과 함께 circadian core oscillator를 구성합니다.
PER2는 생체 리듬 생성에 필수적이며, 전사 루프의 음성 조절 인자로 작용합니다.
주요 발현 조직은 골격근과 췌장이며, 폐에서는 약하게 발현됩니다.
PER2 결함은 가족성 조기 수면 단계 증후군(FASPS)의 원인이 될 수 있습니다.
