DLX1 유전자는 Drosophila distal-less 유전자와 유사한 homeobox 전사인자 계열에 속합니다. 해당 단백질은 핵 내에 위치하며, 여러 TGF-beta superfamily 신호의 전사 조절자로 기능할 수 있습니다. 또한 두개안면 패턴 형성과 전뇌 억제성 뉴런의 분화 및 생존에 관여할 가능성이 있습니다. 이 유전자는 염색체 2의 긴 팔에서 동일 계열의 다른 유전자와 tail-to-tail 구조로 위치하며, 다양한 isoform을 암호화하는 대체 스플라이싱 전사 변이가 보고되었습니다.
