Target Information
Catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) catalyzes the transfer of a methyl group from S-adenosylmethionine to catecholamines, including dopamine, epinephrine, and norepinephrine.
This O-methylation is a major degradative pathway for catecholamine neurotransmitters.
COMT also participates in the metabolism of catechol drugs used in the treatment of hypertension, asthma, and Parkinson’s disease.
COMT exists in two forms in tissues:
- S-COMT (soluble form)
- MB-COMT (membrane-bound form)
The differences between S-COMT and MB-COMT reside within their N-termini.
Several transcript variants are formed through alternative translation initiation sites and promoters.
