Target Information
Ki-67 is a nuclear protein expressed during various stages of the cell cycle, particularly during late G1, S, G2, and M phases. The protein contains a forkhead-associated (FHA) domain that mediates association with euchromatin at the perichromosomal layer, centromeric heterochromatin, and the nucleolus.
Ki-67 shows cell cycle–dependent localization: perinucleolar in G1, nuclear matrix in G2, and chromosomal during M phase. It serves as a proliferation marker since it is absent in G0 cells but increases from G1 through mitosis.
Ki-67 antibodies are valuable for determining the proliferative fraction in neoplasms, correlating with tumor grade and prognosis. It is routinely used as a neuronal marker of cell cycling and proliferation.
